Privacy Policy
What follows is the legal side of things. It covers much the same ground as the privacy policy on every other site you use, only in plainer English. If anything is unclear, get in touch (details are at the bottom).
Effective date: 22 August 2026
The Story Department (“we”, “us”, or “our”) runs Immersion Screenwriting and the Immersion Script course (together, the “Service”). This page explains what personal data we collect when you use it, what we do with that data, and the choices you have.
We use your data to run the course and to make it better. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here. Terms used in this policy have the same meaning as in our Terms and Conditions.
What we collect
Personal Data
While you use the Service, we may ask for information that identifies you or lets us contact you (“Personal Data”). This may include:
- Email address
- First name and last name
- Cookies and Usage Data
Your course activity
The Service is built around showing you your own progress, so it records what you do on it: which steps and days you have completed, when you completed them, your daily streak, and the time you spend on a page while it is open in front of you.
We use this to show your progress back to you, to work out what to unlock next, and to see where students get stuck so we can fix the course.
What you submit
The course asks you for written work, so we store what you send:
- Your synopsis and any other writing you type into the site
- Files you upload, including your script report
- Questions and replies you post in the Q&A
We read this material in order to give you feedback on it. We do not publish your submitted work, and we do not share it with anyone outside the Service.
Payments
If you pay for a course, the payment is handled by our payment provider. Your card details go to them, not to us; we never see or store your full card number. We keep a record of what you bought and when.
Usage Data
We may also collect information about how the Service is accessed and used (“Usage Data”): your IP address, browser type and version, which pages you visit, when and for how long, unique device identifiers, and other diagnostic data.
Cookies
We use cookies and similar tracking technologies to track activity on the Service and hold certain information.
Cookies are small data files, sometimes including an anonymous unique identifier, sent to your browser and stored on your device. We also use beacons, tags, and scripts to collect and track information and to improve and analyse the Service.
You can set your browser to refuse all cookies or to tell you when one is being sent. If you do refuse them, some parts of the Service may not work, including staying logged in and keeping your progress.
The cookies we use:
- Session Cookies, to keep you logged in and operate the Service
- Preference Cookies, to remember your settings
- Security Cookies, for security purposes
How we use your data
We use the collected data:
- To provide and maintain the Service
- To record and display your progress through the course
- To read your submitted work and send you feedback on it
- To notify you about changes to the Service
- To let you take part in the Q&A and other interactive features when you choose to
- To provide customer care and support
- To analyse how the Service is used so we can improve it
- To detect, prevent, and sort out technical issues
Where your data goes
Your information, including Personal Data, may be transferred to and held on computers outside your state, province, or country, where data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction.
If you are outside Australia and choose to provide information to us, note that we transfer the data, including Personal Data, to Australia and process it there. Your consent to this policy, followed by your submission of that information, is your agreement to the transfer.
We take all steps reasonably necessary to make sure your data is treated securely and in line with this policy. No transfer of your Personal Data will take place to an organisation or a country unless adequate controls are in place, including the security of your data.
When we disclose data
We may disclose your Personal Data in the good faith belief that it is necessary:
- To comply with a legal obligation
- To protect and defend our rights or property
- To prevent or investigate possible wrongdoing connected to the Service
- To protect the personal safety of users of the Service or the public
- To protect against legal liability
Security
The security of your data matters to us; keep in mind that no method of transmission over the internet, and no method of electronic storage, is 100% secure. We use commercially acceptable means to protect your Personal Data, but we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Service providers
We may employ third-party companies and individuals to help run the Service, to provide it on our behalf, or to help us analyse how it is used (“Service Providers”). This includes our hosting, email, and payment providers. They have access to your Personal Data only to perform these tasks for us and must not disclose it or use it for anything else.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and progress data while your account is open, and for a reasonable period afterwards for backup and legal reasons. Your submitted work and the feedback on it are kept alongside your account so you can go back to them.
Your data, your choices
You can ask us for a copy of the Personal Data we hold about you, ask us to correct it if it is wrong, or ask us to delete your account and the data attached to it. Write to us using the details below and we will sort it out.
If you are not happy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Links to other sites
The Service may contain links to sites we do not operate, including video hosted elsewhere. If you click a third-party link, you go to that party’s site. We advise you to review the privacy policy of every site you visit; we have no control over, and take no responsibility for, the content, policies, or practices of any third-party site or service.
Children’s privacy
The Service is not aimed at anyone under 18 (“Children”), and we do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under 18. If you are a parent or guardian and you know your child has provided us with Personal Data, please contact us. If we learn we have collected Personal Data from children without verified parental consent, we remove it from our servers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post any new version on this page, let you know by email and/or a prominent notice on the Service before the change takes effect, and update the effective date at the top. Changes take effect when posted here. Check back now and then.
