Terms and Conditions
What follows is the legal side of things, written as plainly as I can manage. It sets out the deal between you and us when you use the site and take the course. If anything is unclear, get in touch (details are at the bottom).
Effective date: 22 August 2026
These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern your use of Immersion Screenwriting and the Immersion Script course (together, the “Service”), run by The Story Department (“we”, “us”, or “our”). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.
Terms used here have the same meaning as in our Privacy Policy.
Who can use the Service
The Service is meant for people aged 18 and over. By using it, you confirm you are at least 18. If you use it on behalf of a company or other organisation, you confirm you have the authority to accept these Terms for them.
Your account
You need an account to take the course. You are responsible for keeping your login details safe and for everything that happens under your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has access to it.
Give us accurate information when you sign up, and keep it current. We may suspend or close accounts that carry false details.
Your enrolment is for you. Do not share your login, and do not pass the course materials to anyone who has not enrolled.
Enrolment, payment, and access
We show you the price before you pay. Payment is handled by our payment provider.
Enrolment gives you access for 12 months from the day you enrol. The course itself runs 28 days; the rest of the time is there so you can restart, go back over a day, or pick it up again after a break. If you want longer after the 12 months are up, get in touch and we will sort something out.
We may change prices from time to time. A price change never affects an enrolment you have already paid for.
Refunds
You can ask for a refund within 14 days of enrolling, as long as you have not yet sent in your midpoint synopsis and script report. Write to us and we will refund the fee.
Once that submission is in, the reading time has been spent and the fee is non-refundable.
Australian consumers have rights under the Australian Consumer Law that these Terms do not take away. Nothing here limits any guarantee, right, or remedy you have under that law.
The course materials
The course is built around scripts, script excerpts, and video that belong to their own writers, studios, and rights holders. They are supplied to you for private study as part of the course, under fair dealing for the purpose of research or study.
That means you may read them, type them out, and write about them for your own learning. You may not republish them, post them anywhere, pass them to anyone who has not enrolled, or use them commercially. If a rights holder asks us to remove something, we will, and the course will carry on without it.
Your work
You keep ownership of everything you write or submit, including your synopses, script reports, transcriptions of your own scenes, and any original material (“Your Work”). We do not claim it as ours.
To run the course, we need your permission to handle Your Work. You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, copy, and process Your Work for the purpose of running the Service, reading your submission, and giving you feedback. This licence ends when you delete the work or close your account, except for copies we must keep for a reasonable period for backup or legal reasons.
We will not publish Your Work, quote it publicly, or share it outside the Service without asking you first.
You are responsible for Your Work. By submitting it, you confirm you have the right to do so and that it does not break any law or infringe anyone else’s rights.
Feedback and the script report
At the midpoint you send in a synopsis and a script report, and we read them and come back with notes, usually within a few days of receiving them.
The feedback is a professional opinion on the pages you sent. It is not a guarantee that your script will sell, place in a competition, get you an agent, or get made. Nobody can promise that, and anyone who does is selling you something else.
The Q&A
The Q&A is there so you can ask questions and read other students’ questions. Keep it civil and keep it on topic. Do not post other people’s work, personal details, or anything you would not want read back to you.
We may remove posts or close a thread where these Terms have been broken.
Certificate
You can download a certificate once you have completed all 28 days and your script report. It records that you finished the course. It is not an accredited qualification and it does not carry academic credit.
What you cannot do
When using the Service, do not:
- Break any law, or infringe anyone’s intellectual property, privacy, or other rights
- Redistribute, resell, or publish the course materials, in whole or in part
- Share your login or let anyone else use your enrolment
- Upload anything unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, or obscene
- Upload viruses or any code designed to disrupt the Service
- Try to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts, or our systems
- Use bots, scrapers, or other automated means to access the Service without our written permission
- Interfere with anyone else’s use of the Service
We may remove content or suspend access if we reasonably believe these Terms have been broken.
Our intellectual property
The Service itself, including its software, design, course structure, written lessons, and branding, belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by law. These Terms do not give you any rights in it beyond using it as intended. Your Work is yours; the course you use to make it is ours.
Third-party links and services
The Service may link to sites or services we do not run, including video hosted elsewhere. We have no control over them and take no responsibility for their content or practices. If you use a third-party service through the Service, that party’s terms apply to your use of it.
Availability
We aim to keep the Service running, but we do not promise it will always be available, uninterrupted, or free of errors. We may change, suspend, or withdraw all or part of it at any time, and we will try to give notice where that is reasonable.
Where we withdraw a course while your access period is still running, we will either give you a comparable replacement or refund the unused part of your fee.
Termination
You can close your account at any time by contacting us.
We may suspend or close your account if you break these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering the Service. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will give you notice. When your account closes, your right to use the Service ends. Any terms that by their nature should survive termination (such as those on your work licence, liability, and governing law) continue to apply.
Disclaimers and liability
The Service is provided “as is”. To the extent the law allows, we do not give any warranty that it will meet your needs or produce any particular result. The course, the exercises, and the feedback are tools to help your own creative work, not a guarantee of success.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits, or opportunity, arising from your use of the Service. Where our liability cannot be excluded but can be limited, it is limited to resupplying the Service or paying the cost of resupply. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. You and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales and the courts that hear appeals from them.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will post the new version on this page and update the effective date at the top. Where the changes are significant, we will let you know by email and/or a prominent notice on the Service before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after changes take effect, you accept the new Terms.
