Day 16 – Ozark to Yellowstone · Step 2 of 2

Step 2: Discovery p. 1 – 14

Topic · 1 minute

I won’t tell you what  Yellowstone is about. This is part of your job in this course, as you will write a one-page synopsis of the pilot episode.

Taylor Sheridan’s stories are all somehow connected to places, people and issues he cares about, and the characters of Kayce/Cory may well be his alter egos.

I will leave the Discovery of this pilot to you, but I have a few questions for you to ponder, which you may answer in for your script report.

  • What is the metaphor in this opening scene?
  • Can you see any parallels with the pilot teaser of BREAKING BAD?
  • The order of the scenes in the finished pilot is: 1 – / – 3 – 5 – 4 – 6. In other words: the second scene doesn’t appear, and is replaced by a scene that is not in the script. Every following scene was rearranged. If you have seen the pilot, can you guess why this reshuffling? Perhaps the next question may help you.
  • From these first few scenes, who would you say are the most important characters in this show? In what order would you rank them?
  • Why does Sheridan include scene transitions? He is not a newbie, and should know that they’re usually only included in a shooting script (which this is not).

Did you know…

KAYCE, the character played by Luke Grimes in Yellowstone is named CORY in this script, the same as Jeremy Renner’s character in WIND RIVER (2017). Both characters share similar traits, and have a son around the same age as Taylor Sheridan’s son at the time of filming WIND RIVER.
